almost 37 week appointment

Had our almost-37-week appointment today. Before I get to it I want to backtrack a little. Last week Tuesday I got a little nervous because the baby was moving in a weird manner (he was spazzing out all day, and usually he is quiet for a few hours while I'm active or at work). So I called my doctor and since they were closing in a few minutes, they sent me to get checked over at the hospital. Bob was out of town for doing some location stuff for the movie, and of course I couldnt get a hold of him, so I called mom and she came with me. There, they hooked me up to the the NST machine to monitor contractions and the baby's heartbeat. Everything looked ok (so they said), but they wanted to do an exam anyway to make sure I wasnt dialated or anything. I have to mention that the doctor didn't seem too experienced, and the exam hurt like hell. He couldnt reach my cervix, so I was still high and closed with no dilation. YAY. Although I was/am getting anxious, I don't want this baby to come 4 weeks early.

Fast forward to my almost-37-week-appointment today. I am up 2 lbs. since last week. (Not sure how that happened) which brings my total weight gain to 27 lbs. I'm happy with that. Doctor says I have gained and measured normal, which brings me to the question... Why does everyone exclaim in a high-pitched, shrilly voice "You look so smaaaaaallll!" when I tell them I only have 3 weeks to go. I guess people are used to seeing women get really big when they are pregnant?? I really don't look as enormous as I do in my pictures on the blog. I think the camera adds 20 lbs. to pregnant people. Anywhoo.

So Bob and I are at the appointment (I'll have to get Bob's thoughts on that later-- his first time with me getting an exam) and the NP listens to the heartbeat (140) and does another check on me. I wasn't expecting anything since last week I was closed for business, so we were surpurised when she exclaimed that I was really thinned out (my cervix, that is), and a finger dilated! Woohoo! Some progress! At least I know that my body is doing something. Who knows... maybe the Holmes Elementary teacher's tradition of birthing babies at 38 weeks will carry on!!

Next appointment is Tuesday, but I will try to update a belly pic before them.
Thanks for checking in!
